Arcadia Interrupted - by Zhi Ho

The quick bright steps of Paradise are more than what they seem Resounding slight in my ears tonight Her head is turned just to the right and I am going to run in fright She is dressed just as I thought she might, a dress of blue and green. Ah no, my feet, they will not move, her diamonds are all a-gleam Her feet are slight but her shoes are tight and her smile, it wants to bite. I must walk to her, I fumble, my legs are tangled in the light My steps are trite and my lungs ignite and her gaze is quite obscene. “Elise,” she greets me smiling, putting forth her slender hand “Jeanne,” I answer, smiling, and her name is sweet again Her touch to mine is broken by the mark of her wedding band But behind us sits a girl in white who sings to the baby grand It’s a balmy night, the jazz is sweet, with its smoky, sad refrain And the stars and silk are far above this promised, silent land.
