Keep the Flag Flying - by Owain Jevons
Keep the flag flying for when I return;
A candle set low in the hall falling
And fading to the tide from the door,
Heavy darkness burning out into restless dreams,
Dim fancies floating across the empty half
Of the bed, rising and snuffed out on the battlements
Amongst the wild rains and ruthless winds.
Keep your hair free and your eyes turned south,
And a ring steadfast on your finger clinging
And calling across the years and the miles;
Now set down as you sleep, on cold
Yellowed lace, stretched by the repeated touch
Of ache and age, soft beneath the fallen hours of dust;
Your silent soldier still behind weak clasps.
Keep yourself healthy and as happy as can be,
And wear your smile on your cheeks, glowing
And growing to the man across the village hall;
The lights and music as you jitterbug once more
To a tune you thought you’d forgotten.
But change the spare key we kept by the door,
For although I’ll return,
You will see me no more.
